If you’ve never been to Brussels before, it’s a great idea to do a city tour to make sure you don’t miss anything! Bus and walking tours are both available, but if you’re travelling with children, why not do the Comic Strip Trail. Spread over 3 miles of the city, try and spot famous Belgian cartoon characters painted onto the walls of the buildings. There are 30 murals in total, so it can be a fun game to see who can spot the most during your stay, if you don’t fancy doing the whole trail, as you’re bound to encounter them along the way.
The Atomium, is one of the city’s most iconic and strange looking buildings- and a far cry from the antiquity of the Grand Place. Built in 1958 for the World’s Fair, it is designed to mimic a molecule’s nine atoms at 165 billion times the size. Each of the nine spheres can be linked by escalators, and include the Panoramic restaurant with unrivalled views of the city as well as permanent and temporary exhibitions. Thrill seekers should visit in summer to try out the Death-Ride- a descent of 100 meters from the top sphere!
Brussels has a great selection of museums, but the Musee Rene Magritte continues to be a firm favourite. The collection is housed within the former surrealist painters house, where he resided for 24 years between 1930 and 1954. You’ll be able to wander round the carefully reconstructed apartment of Magritte and see over 400 documents, photos and objects related to the painter. For those more interested in the art works themselves, the museum also contains 30 permanent originals as well temporary works throughout the year. Guided tours are also available, whether you want to build on your current knowledge or get an introduction into the world of this renowned artist.
Enjoy your stay in this cultural European hub!
