Symbolic of this is the Plaza de Toros de la Ventas, a large bullring still in operation today. Established in 1931, the bullring has a seating capacity of 25,000 and is widely regarded as the home of bullfighting in Spain. Tourists can soak up the traditional atmosphere and attend a fight during the season from March to October.

Just a short walk down the Calle de Acala or a quick trip on the metro is the largest and most well-known public park in Madrid, the Parque del Buen Retiro. Literally meaning the ‘Park of the Pleasant Retreat’, the park boasts 350 acres of idyllic parkland, beautiful sculptures, picturesque flower gardens and a large boating lake. As a tranquil oasis in the heart of one of Europe’s most lively capital cities, the park is a place in which both tourists and locals alike can indulge in total rest and relaxation. A few minutes from the nearby Atocha rail station, the largest station in Madrid, is the capital’s famed ‘Golden Triangle’ of fine art institutions. Located on the Calle de Santa Isabel is the vast Reina Sofia Museum, an art gallery dedicated to Spanish masterpieces of the 20th century. The Reina Sofia is notable as the home of Picasso’s famous masterpiece Guernica, as well as a host of other works by icons such as Dali, Damien Hirst and Francis Bacon. Also regarded as the greatest art establishments in the country are the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Prado Museum which are both just a short walk down the Paseo del Prado.
