Brussels has many beautiful gardens with elegant statuary, which enchant at any time of the year. The Botanical Gardens and Royal Greenhouses are truly beautiful. If these aren’t open, look for the Gardens of the Van Buuren Museum including ‘the labyrinth’. Combine a visit to the Royal Palace with the Museum of the Dynasty to see the artefacts of the Kings and Queens of Belgium. These are suitable for couples looking for a romantic walk, families who want to give the children somewhere traffic free to run around and for the lone traveller searching for a peaceful haven in the city.
If you find yourself in the gardens of Petit Sablon Square, you might as well start shopping for souvenirs! This square houses a market daily including cheese, meats and fresh flowers (as well as Tintin memorabilia!) These markets pop up in the small squares all over the city. Elegant cocktail bars and comfortable cafés are always located on squares and down side streets, and give a welcome break to your shopping trip. Espace Louise, close to the hotel, is a shopping centre housing an art gallery, which is well worth visiting. To help you choose your purchases, visit the Brewer’s Museum in the old Brewer’s Guild on the Grand Place but buy your beer in the supermarket for a true bargain. The other must see is the Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate, which is small but gives a good demonstration on how to make arguably Brussels’ most famous export.
If you’re visiting with children, try to go to mini-Europe and see the models of Vesuvius, Venice and Big Ben as well as the large Atonium modern art statue. And bring your swimming costumes for a trip to Océade, the capital’s water park which is open all year round. For night owls, the best night out can be found at the Délirium Café which is a couple of metres from the Grand Place and whose list of beers is so long it gained a mention in the Guinness Book of Records.
