Amsterdam is the proud home of the Rembrandt House Museum, where the famous Dutch artist lived for a number of years and also painted a number of works, before being declared bankrupt in 1656. Queen Wilhelmina officially opened the museum in June 1911, with the collection steadily growing as a result of purchases and donations from owners of Rembrandt’s work. Visitors to the museum can gain a fascinating insight into how paintings were developed in the seventeenth century, with daily demonstrations in the printing and painting studio. The main attraction is of course the vast collection of Rembrandt’s world-famous etchings, and there is a permanent display in the museum as well as a range of special exhibitions throughout the year. The museum has a fantastic gift shop on site, where visitors can purchase a range of souvenirs related to the museum and Rembrandt’s work. Although there isn’t a café on site there are a number of well-priced restaurants, bars and cafes within close walking distance of the museum, including Rembrandt Corner, which is next door.
We hope you have a fantastic time during your stay in Amsterdam!
