Barcelona is the perfect blend between rural and urban, surrounded by mountains and the Mediterranean sea and yet bursting with premier shopping and an abundance of nightlife and eateries. Passeig de Gracia is the best place to head for retail therapy, with luxury brands such as Burberry and Cartier sat alongside high street favourites Zara and H&M. Then wander down la rambla to have your portrait drawn by one of the resident artists and pick up a cone of crema catalana flavoured ice cream from one of the ice cream vendors. Armed with your ice cream, walk around the winding streets of the gothic quarter where you’ll find boutique shops and delicious Tapas bars such as Sensi. Look out for the Roman ruins and be sure to poke your head in at the cathedral.
A great day trip from the city is to the mountain top monastery of Montserrat, just a short train journey from the centre. The monastery is famous for its statue of the black Madonna, but it’s also known for the strange rock formations that make up the mountain. There’s an array of hiking routes through the national park here, and from the highest point you’ll be able to see the island of Mallorca. Alternatively, Montjuic is a hill in the city with a castle on top offering fantastic views and the opportunity for pleasant walks through the gardens.
The city’s beach is also a popular choice for outdoorsy types, with volleyball courts and watersports available. In the evenings, enjoy a cocktail at one of the bars such as Shoko or the W hotel before heading to one of the nightclubs such as Opium. For something more cultural, many venues in the centre have flamenco shows, and if you’re visiting in the summer there is an outdoor cinema at Montjuic. At Christmas, an ice rink takes over Plaza Catalunya and many shops open their doors for discount late night shopping accompanied by free drinks!
