The famous O’Connell Street is located right in the heart of the capital, running right through the centre. It is described as the most monumental area of Dublin, and was rebuilt in the early 20th century after the Irish Civil war. It is home to a vast array of stunning neoclassical buildings built in the signature stone of the area, making a stroll down this bustling street a wonderful experience for visitors. Here visitors can also find a number of famous and iconic statues, including Daniel O’Connell, the Charles Stewart Parnell Monument made of beautiful solid Galway granite, and Sir John Gray made of white Sicilian marble, to name just a few.
Another famous sight of the area is the Spire of Dublin. This fantastic modern artistic monument stands in the place of the former Nelsons Pillar, which was destroyed by an IRA bomb in 1966. The magnificent stainless steel spire is an amazing 121.2 metres high, and was designed by Ian Ritchie.
If you fancy a bite to eat or a romantic evening meal, head to Flanagan’s restaurant on Upper O’Connell Street, located just beside the Spire. Here you can find a renowned traditional Irish menu at reasonable prices, each dish consisting of fresh and local produce. Some of the favourites include the hearty Traditional Irish Stew, and the delicious Beef and Guinness Pie. If you fancy something different, there’s even a Pizzeria upstairs!
