Within walking distance of your Hot Rate Hotel is the historic Leeds City Museum. Originally established in 1819, the museum was established by the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society. It was badly affected by bombing in 1941, and the museum was closed at the turn of the century and underwent significant redevelopment before finally reopening again in 2008. Exhibits include a stunning Life on Earth natural history gallery, with the most prominent display being the ‘man-eating’ stuffed tiger. Other exhibits include the Ancient Worlds gallery, including archaeological finds from the UK and further afield, including a 3000 year old mummification of Nesyamun.
The Museum is located in Millennium Square, which was the city’s flagship project to mark the year 2000 and is now an integral part of the city centre. Here you can find a number of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the Town Hall, Leeds Academy, and the Leeds College of Art. There are a number of restaurants and bars that surround the square, and in the summer months live sport is projected onto a big screen that attracts significant crowds. Also located here is the Nelson Mandela Gardens, which were opened by Mandela in 2001 when he was also granted Freedom of the City. Millennium Square is a great spot to begin exploring the city as it provides easy walking access to the shops, restaurants, public transport stops, and bars – as well as institutional attractions.
We hope you have a wonderful time during your stay in your Hot Rate Hotel in Leeds!
