The name ‘Malta’ derives from the Greek word melite, a reference to something that is sweet or honey-like, which is believed to have been based upon Malta’s production of honey, which led to the nickname of ‘the land of honey’. Due to its location Malta has been involved in a number of historical battles and was owned by a number of empires, the last of which was the British, who gained the island in 1814. Malta was seen as an important stopover point when travelling to India, and the local population were able to use the travelling British as a source of income. After independence in September 1964, Malta continued to have Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State until it declared itself a Republic in December 1974. The island is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, and first gained independence from British rule in 1964.
Malta has a largely Christian population, and there are a number of churches and cathedrals across the island that are popular with tourists to visit, as well as locals who use them for service. Malta was also the location where St. Paul was shipwrecked, and has led to the establishment of a Church of Saint Paul’s Shipwreck in the capital, Valletta. The small front door is deceiving, as behind it you will find a large and beautiful church with a number of decorations and historical relics – including St. Paul’s wrist bone. There are information sheets provided if you wish to learn more about the building and St. Paul’s story, and entrance is free but a small donation to the church is recommended. Valetta has a fantastic waterfront that is a popular spot to relax in the evenings for both locals and tourists, with a number of restaurants, bars and shops along the waterfront. Watching the sunset across the Grand Harbour provides beautiful scenery, so bring your camera for some memorable holiday pictures. For those that wish to learn more about Malta’s history, a visit to the Mdina Old City is highly recommended. With informative guided tours available throughout the year, you can walk along the narrow streets whilst hearing all about the previous residents have left their mark on the city and how it was developed. The city was previously Malta’s capital, and it is now very much pedestrianised making it easier to explore at your leisure. You can also enjoy stunning views of the island from the bastions, and here you can also find a top-class restaurant, ideal for those on a romantic break.
