The Grand Place is the Belgian capital’s most famous landmark and plaza, and now a UNESCO world heritage site. Originally a market square, the plaza now contains important buildings such as the Town Hall, but is mostly famed for its eclectic architecture. The Town Hall, or Hotel de Ville, dates back to the 15th century and was remarkably the only building to survive the French bombardment in 1695. Another notable building in the plaza is the King’s House, a former bakery and later used by the duke of Brabant for administrative purposes, it is now the Brussels City Museum. The square is a fine place to enjoy a coffee whilst people watching, but should you be visiting over the Christmas period you’ll also be able to enjoy the festive décor and market stalls by day and the fireworks and carol singing by night.
Belgium is of course famous for it’s chocolates, so a must-do during your trip is to sample some of these sweet delights! Pierre Marcolini is a well known chocolatier in the city, with a mouth watering selection of pralines and ganaches. If you’re visiting over one of the festivities be sure to stock up on stocking fillers, Easter eggs or Valentine’s inspired treats! If you’re looking for somewhere to sit down for a sweet fix, then Am Sweet is a beautiful tearoom, reminiscent of a Parisian apartment, with chic décor and a menu of yummy brunch dishes, Laurent Gerbraud chocolates and plenty of teas!
Looking for something relaxing to do? Piscine Victor Boin is an Art Deco swimming pool with a Turkish Bath, perfect for girly day out or a couples excursion. Alternatively take a stroll around Bois de la Cambre, a stunning park in the capital where you can hire bicycles and set up for the day with a picnic. With many wooded areas of the park, it’s perhaps most beautiful in the autumn when the leaves are golden, although in the warmer months it also plays host to cultural and sporting events so be sure to check what’s on during your visit.
