It might sound strange, but one of the capitals best attractions is a statue of a little boy weeing in a bronze fountain, known as the Manneken Pis. Dating back to 1619, the sculpture is a testament to the brilliant Belgian humour and there has long been a tradition for heads of state to bring an outfit for the boy during their visit. The Brussels Museum now has an impressive collection of over 760 outfits that the little boy has worn over the years. There’s even an Elvis jumpsuit!
The neo-classical building of the Royal Palace is another of the city’s most popular attractions, as the primary residence of the King. Tours are available over part of the summer months, and with free admission it’s a worthy day out. However there is another Palace you can explore during your visit, the remains of the Coudenberg Palace located underneath the Place Royale. Once the home of Charles V, the Palace was destroyed in 1731 when fire broke out from the kitchens. In 1774, the ruins were replaced with the current square that now stands but underground tours are available to discover more about this once grand building.
