One of the lesser visited, yet just as historically interesting neighbourhoods in the city is Köpenick’s Altstadt. The originally medieval cobblestone streets still maintain much of their charm as when they were first laid down and there are various politically important monuments and landmarks lining them, such as the memorial exhibit to commemorate the victims of Nazi suppression in 1933. Other fascinating buildings nearby include the striking municipal courthouse and the monument given to the victims in the Platz des 23 April, right by the river. For unique and charming examples of baroque architecture, head along Strasse Alt-Kopenick, where you can also see a town hall built in 1904 in neo-Gothic style.
Budding historians will find the Haus der Wannsee-Konferenz both remarkable and highly moving. The historic site on Am Grossen Wannsee Street was once the location for important Nazi meetings and where hugely influential decisions were made about the regime. It remains now as an emotional memorial to its victims and a site for reflection and remembrance, with detailed commentary and a series of original photos.
