Passeig de Gracia is a strip of luxury and high street shops such as Kiehls, Cartier and Bershka. It’s also where you’ll find two of Gaudi’s famous buildings, Casa Milà and Casa Batlló, both of which can be entered for a fee. If you carry on along this street to the north you’ll arrive in the Gracia district, known for its restaurants and bars. For innovative tapas try La Panxa del Bisbe, Momos for delicious Asian dishes and Els Jardinets de Gracia for a romantic dinner. Wander south from Passeig de Gracia and you’ll end up at Plaza Catalunya, with a flagship Apple store and the Corte Ingles department store.

If you’re visiting Barcelona with children, the beach at Barceloneta is a must. Pack a picnic and enjoy the sun, sea and sand with a happy hour cocktail from one of the many beach bars. If you’re not visiting during the summer, the zoo in Ciutadella Park is a great option, with daily feeds and talks as well as informative displays about animal conservation. Highlights include the seal show, tropical birds and the penguins. Nearby is the city’s Arc de Triomphe, a red brick structure built in 1888 for the Barcelona World Fair. This palm tree lined avenue is also a popular spot for skateboarders and bladers.

Barcelona is a good jumping off point for daytrips to the Pyrenees, the beach town of Sitges and the mountain monastery Montserrat. The latter of which is famed for its 12th century sculpture of the black Madonna, and its interesting serrated rock formations which make it a popular destination for hikers. Scuba divers can also dive at the Costa Blanca with daytrips available from water sports companies in the city but if you don’t have time to make the trip, why not dive with the sharks at Barcelona Aquarium!

However you choose to spend your time in this vibrant city, you won’t be disappointed with the array of activities on offer!
