Nottingham has a number of stunning historical attractions, with Nottingham Castle one of the most visited landmarks in the city. Located on what is known as ‘Castle Rock’, the castle was originally built on the orders of William the Conqueror in 1067, one year after the Battle of Hastings. Originally a wooden structure, during the reign of Henry II the castle went under extensive work to make the structure more secure, which led to replacing the wooden structure with a more solid stone base. Used as both a place for royals and the wealthy nobles to enjoy leisure activities such as hunting as well as being an important strategic vantage point, the castle was involved in a number of historical battles, most notably in 1194, when it was captured by Prince John. During the English Civil War in 1642 Charles I chose the city of Nottingham as his main rallying point for his armies, and several conflicts between Royalists and Parliamentarians took place here. Today, visitors can explore the impressive castle museum that also includes an art gallery, allowing you to learn more about the history of the building and its importance to the city, as well as viewing the stunning art collection.
Have a fantastic time during your visit to Nottingham!
