The Catedral de Santa Maria la Real de la Almudena is the main church in the Diocese of Madrid, despite only being completed in 1993 and was consecrated by Pope John Paul II. The interior is designed in a Gothic style and includes a neo-Romanesque crypt, whilst the building itself is made of granite and marble. It is recognisable for its two towers that stand at the main entrance, and large bronze doors dominate the second entrance. The Cathedral is closely located to the Royal Palace, and is open from 10am until 7.30pm every day except during Mass and on Sundays when it is open from 10.30am – 12pm and 1.30pm – 7pm.
Close by you can find the Royal Theatre, which was first opened as an opera building in 1850 but became re-established as a concert hall and theatre for the Madrid Symphonic Orchestra in 1965. Having hosted the Eurovision Song contest in 1969, the museum went under extensive refurbishment in 1988 and was reopened as an opera house in 1997, with brand new acoustics that are regarded as some of the best in the world. Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the theatre and learn about the history of the building, and there is also a museum to explore too.
