One of Copenhagen’s best loved attractions is the bronze statue of the Little Mermaid situated along the promenade. The statue was commissioned by the son of the founder of Carlsberg and is based on the protagonist of the much loved Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name. Another must see landmark is the Rundetaarn, a tower from the 17th century used by astronomers to observe the activities of the night’s sky. Today tourists can climb the spiral staircase to the observation deck where they can enjoy views of the city skyline as far as neighbouring Sweden.

Bakken amusement park is situated just north of Copenhagen in a stunning beech forest, and is one of the oldest functioning amusement parks in the world, alongside Tivoli which is located in the centre of the capital. If you’re visiting with children, make sure to make a visit to at least one. The parks are pretty retro with old school rides like the bumper cars but they do have roller coasters too! For adult entertainment, head to the Casino Copenhagen and try your luck at a game of poker, or if you’re feeling more cultural catch a show at the Copenhagen Opera House.

Copenhagen makes a great destination for weekend shopping with a huge range of both high street and designer stores. In Kongens Nytorv square you’ll find Scandanavian department store Magasin de Nord where you can pick up pieces from native designers. If you’re visiting over the summer months, there are plenty of flea markets to explore too selling second hand goods, vintage clothes and antiquities. Try the Horsholm Flea Market for a good selection including furniture or for antiques year round, Ravnsborg Street is full of curious shops and additional outdoor stalls on Sundays.
