The Catedral de Santa Maria la Real de la Almudena is the main church in the Diocese of Madrid, despite only being completed in 1993 and was consecrated by Pope John Paul II. Close by you can find the Royal Theatre, which was first opened as an opera building in 1850 but became re-established as a concert hall and theatre for the Madrid Symphonic Orchestra in 1965. Having hosted the Eurovision Song contest in 1969, the museum went under extensive refurbishment in 1988 and was reopened as an opera house in 1997, with brand new acoustics that are regarded as some of the best in the world. Inside you can see the intricate artwork along the walls of the church, and the smaller side-chapels are often open to the public to explore. Visitors can also see sculptures by 18th century artists such as Juan Pascual de Mena, and the stained-glass windows are beautifully designed and are a firm favourite with visitors. The church is open Monday to Sunday until 8.30pm, but is closed in the middle of the afternoon for siesta, but is conveniently located close to the Prado and makes a nice addition to a day out visiting Madrid’s top attractions.
