Originally constructed as a Byzantine fort in order to protect the harbour, the original building was destroyed by an earthquake in 1222. The Venetians dismantled the second building in the mid-16th century, before the Ottomans restored and strengthened the Castle after recapturing the island. Since 1935 the Castle has been registered as a listed building due to its fascinating history and archaeological importance, and visitors can enjoy spectacular views from the top of the building.
A visit to the Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery provides visitors with not only a wonderful insight into religious institutions in the local area, but also beautiful views of the surrounding region. Situated some 610 metres above sea level, the site was first used in the 12th century, although the current building dates back to the 18th century. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the monastery includes a number of religious icons and treasures, most notably a statue of the Virgin Mary made entirely from silver.
