Bullfighting is synonymous with Spain, and although a controversial sport, curiosity often takes visitors to watch a game at Las Ventas bullring. During May and June, the famous San Isidro bullfighting festival also takes place here, where the best matadors from around the globe take part in a 20 day fighting program. Madrid’s other famous sport is of course football, and the Bernabeu Stadium, home of Real Madrid football club, is open for self-guided tours year round. Learn more about this iconic club through its museum of trophies, football footage and memorabilia before walking out the tunnel in the footsteps of the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Raul Gonzalez.

The Salamanca district is known as the wealthy part of the city, with designer shops like Chanel, Burberry and Dolce and Gabanna lining its avenues. For a one stop shop, head to the Corte Ingles department store where you’ll find everything from food to designer and highstreet clothing and accessories. For more cultural shopping, head to one of the open air markets and snag a bargain. El Rastro is Madrid’s best loved flea market where you’ll find vintage furs, antiquities, records and books. To pick up some artwork, the Paintings Market takes place every Sunday in Plaza Conde de Barajas- if you’re feeling important, why not have a painting of yourself commissioned!

In the evening, you’ll be spoilt for choice where to go and what to do. For romance, head to one of the roof bars such as Hotel Emperador or the Terrace at Hotel Urban, where you can watch the sunset and sip on a cocktail. For entertainment a Flamenco show at Corral de la Moreria is a must but if you’re concerned with dancing the night away try popular haunts such as Kapital or Sala Siroco.
