The main governmental buildings are located at Placa Sant Jaume, in the heart of the neighbourhood, and are stunning examples of quintessential Renaissance and neo-classical architectural design. Nearby, in the other main square (Placa de la Seu) is the iconic Barcelona Cathedral whose construction began in 1298 and was only completed in 1913. Inside the main building there are numerous sculptures, paintings and other details of historic interest, such as the crypt and alabaster tomb of the AD 303 martyr, Eulalia, to whom the cathedral is dedicated. You can also jump in a lift to the very top and enjoy views over the Old Town. Next door to the cathedral is the equally beautiful and fascinating cloister which, when shed with sunlight, paints a stunning picture with lush foliage, ancient stones and snow-white geese.

Just around the corner, sweet-tooth visitors will get their sugar fix seen to in style at Caelum. This delightful bakery and café sells every kind of sweet treat imaginable, and all of them made by local Catalan nuns and monks in their convents and monasteries. The mock Roman arches in exposed brick make the perfect backdrop to the quaint underground café, where you can enjoy a pot of herbal tea and slice of cake – too good to share!
