Barcelona’s gothic quarter is rich in history and culture, with winding passages and traditional bars and restaurants around every corner. In the day, walk around the old Roman walls of the city and poke your head in at the Cathedral, dedicated to Santa Eulalia. Outside the front you’ll find street performers and market stalls (depending on the time of year). The area comes alive at night, and if you visit just one bar make sure it’s Hook Bar. This pirate themed venue is like something from a dream- it’s more like a museum!
For shopping, there’s Spanish department store el Corte Ingles on the corner of Plaza Catalunya. You’ll find designer brands, homeware, electronics, beauty products and a gourmet supermarket all under one roof. Alternatively, Passeig de Gracia just a stones throw from here has a mix of designer and high street brands. Remember that Spanish brands Zara and Mango are much cheaper here than in the UK! For food souvenirs, there’s only one place to go, la boqueria market. You’ll be able to stock up on the famous Iberico ham, catalan chocolates and delicious manchego cheese.
If you’re visiting with children, ensure you make time for a trip to Barcelona Zoo. The zoo is located in ciutadella park, which is lovely in itself, and you’ll be greeted by monkeys, lions and kangaroos among many more rare and exotic species. For romance, take a rowing boat out on the small lake in the park before strolling over to the impressive fountain and enjoying a bite to eat al fresco.
