If you’re looking for a day excursion from Barcelona, Montserrat is highly recommended. This mountain top monastery can be easily reached from Plaça d’Espanya, where you’ll catch a train before journeying the last bit by cable car or funicular. The monastery is free to enter, and there are daily services visitors are welcome to attend. The monastery is particularly famous for the black Madonna, a Romanesque sculpture dating back to the 12th century. Outside the monastery, the national park here is a favourite amongst hikers, and from the highest point the island of Mallorca can even be seen. Although there are eateries here, they’re very touristy so it’s recommended to pack a picnic and find a spot to enjoy the stunning views.
Back in Barcelona, there’s no shortage of things to see and do. Head to la boqueria food market off la rambla to marvel at the beautiful displays of seafood and exotic fruit and veg, before sampling some of the local cuisine for yourself. Take a seat at one of the tapas bars here or grab some street food. The mini fish and chips, homemade empanadas (Argentinian pasties) and crepes here are all to die for. For some souvenirs and local boutique shops, head into the neighbouring gothic quarter and make sure to look out for the remains of the roman walls.
If you’re looking for somewhere to entertain the children, there is a zoo and aquarium in the city, of which the former is highly recommended. Alternatively at the top of Tibidabo is a fun fair with favourites such as the bumper cars, a ghost train and even an 80kmph rollercoaster. Other highlights include the puppet shows and circus parades over the weekends.
